Care for Your Lawn Through the Winter
Before winter you should ensure that there is no new leaf growth on your lawn as this may make it more likely to succumb to pests and diseases. To do this gradually, decrease the the cutting blade height of your lawnmower until you are just about shaving the grass. Do this in steps over several weeks as you do not want to abruptly remove all the tissue or cause more damage to the turf. You do not want to leave the grass above 2 inches for the winter months.
Administer top dressing to your grass in the late autumn. Even though this will not be used by the grass during the slow growth of the cold weather it will be reserved in the roots and be instantly available for use by the lawn in the Spring when new growth begins. At this time you could reseed brown or bare areas. The grass seeds will sprout in the colder weather.
Clear up any debris from the grass before the first snowfall. This includes branches, logs, equipment, pots etc. If left in place when it snows they could smother the grass under the blanket of snow and cause damage which can make the grass susceptible to diseases. During the cold season, even though the grass will grow not as fast weeds will grow faster so you need to weekly remove weeds to keep them from causing damage to the lawn.
Also you need to water the lawn throughout the winter, although less often than you would in the Summer or Spring. For most grass varieties watering every week should be enough. Some types, e.g. rye grass and tall fescue grow well in the colder weather and will benefit from fertilising and watering during this season.
If you have a sprinkler system empty out all the water to avoid damage when below freezing. You do not want to use it in the Spring only to find leaking pipes.
