Christmas Ready Landscaping
Most every landscape or garden is designed to accommodate the lifestyle and vision of the home owner. Putting out Christmas lights and other holiday decorations is one of the best parts of the holidays for a lot of people. So designing electric outlets and access into their landscaping can prove to be very convenient when time to decorate for the holidays.
Making the landscaping Christmas ready, for most folks, only means that certain holiday looking plants are placed in the garden or landscaping for winter interest. A lot of evergreens like the Holly for instance, symbolize the Christmas season while adding color to the landscaping all Winter long. It’s also common to see wreaths made out of them. Many other plants that produce red berries, again like the Holly, also can create a Christmas atmosphere throughout the Winter landscape.
While creating Winter interest in landscaping and gardens can be done with certain plants, Winter interest isn’t the real topic of this article. What this article considers is the people who look forward to decorating their yard and home for the holidays every year. They may want to consider how they can add decorating, decorations, and Christmas lighting to their landscaping and garden designs. In other words, make electrical outlets accessible throught the landscaping.
Some modern Christmas yard decorations and lights are very elaborate and use a lot of electricity. From small displays of lights to magnificent digital lighting setups that spread out over the entire yard. The electrical outlets and power needed to run these lights and displays may be far more than the outlets and power available from the home. The majority of landscape designs never give any consideration to adding electricity where it’s needed for doing such things as Christmas yard decorations. Right out in the yard itself.
Aside from Christmas and other holiday decorations, having electrical outlets throughout your property is often convenient for a lot of other purposes. And while we most generally plan for low voltage electrical lighting throughout the landscape, very few of our clients ever consider the need for house current in the yard until we mention it as an option in their design.
So once decided as a consideration for your landscaping plan, electrical outlets, lines, and anything house current has to be installed by professionals. There’s is no room for even a slight error when installing electricity. It works best if the electrical network for the decorations has a dedicated circuit box and breakers. With a designated power source, there should always be plenty of juice for the entire decorating system. Also, if anything goes wrong with the lighting system, it can be worked on by itself without having to turn off the house electricity.
One last thought for adding electicity throughout your yard and gardens is the visibility of the receptacles. Few things look worse in a well groomed yard. If flowers or plant beds are designed into the landscape, electric junctions and plugins can be placed and hidden in the plants. Outlets can also be installed in special weatherproof juction boxes that are mounted directly at ground level. They can be used when needed and are otherwise unaffected by sprinkler systems, mowing, and weather.
Once again, all landscaping projects should be a reflection of their owner. And a lot of people make a big annual production out of decorating their homes for Christmas, Halloween, and other holidays. Designing a dedicated electrical system for decorations into their landscaping will be a true convenience when it’s time to decorate the yard for the holidays.
