Creative Roof And Balcony Gardens
If you’re a city dweller and are fortunate enough to have access to a little roof or balcony space, you have the unique opportunity to create an oasis garden in the midst of all the concrete. Designing landscaping ideas for places like these generally has to address the obstacles of constant severe winds and scorching heat from direct sun. However, with the right planning and planting ideas, you can make a screen to block out a lot of the wind and create a little shade to give protection from the piercing rays of the sun.
The first and most important planning step for a garden like this is to study how well the building is put together. Take the time to find out what materials the roof or balcony is made of and how it is constructed and put together. Balconies and roofs can have very little space and if they’re required hold people, furniture, and heavy pots filled with dirt and plants, it’s important that they are able to hold all that weight up. If you are building a small garden on a roof, the roof must be made of waterproof material so that leaks do not occur, and there must be a good drainage system to carry away excess water. Safe access to the roof is necessary if it is going to be easy to get to and enjoyed.
It’s probable that there will be utility poles and wire in and around the area of your roof top garden. These can easily be camoflaged by planting the right types of plants in the right places. Small planters, pots, and containers filled with flowers and plants will help make the atmosphere in the garden while bigger container plants can do the same and also create a green screen to keep out neighboring views. Designing roof top gardens is the same as with any small garden, patio, or courtyard, as you should try to not crowd the small area of space that you are limited to. Be sure to plan for a little seating room where you can sit back and enjoy any views that can be saved framed rather than completely hidden from view.
Long wooden planters are preferable over using a lot of small pots as it will spread the load out more evenly. You can also add water absorbing polymer crystals to your planting mix. This will cut down on daily watering and maintenance needs as they hold moisture in the soil until plants need it and less evaporates. If the roof can’t hold much weight, another consideration for plants is hydroponics. Hydroponically grown plants only need nutrient liquid and a light base so the pots with plants don’t weigh near as much as dirt filled pots.
Your roof garden is also a great place to keep a small worm farm so that your prize plants can benefit while you also get rid of household wastes.
