Growing Herbs Outside

I started my first herb garden in my parents’ backyard, tucked over in the corner beside the storage shed, encircling an immature Bradford Pear tree. Once I made up my mind to do a square-shaped bed I used red bricks to edge the bed and to divide it into four square sections. I planted different herbs in each section.
Italian herbs in one section, including parsley, basil and oregano. In another area I grew a tea garden, full of peppermint, anise, chamomile and fennel. Another section had medicinal herb plants, including aloe vera, horseradish and calendula. The last [section|quarter] had cosmetic [herb plants|herbs] like for lavender, chervil and lemon verbena that I used in soaps, lotions and shampoos.
I was really happy with the results that first year. The second year didn’t go so well, because the mints I had started quickly took over, my chamomile crept way outside the herb garden, and my lavender died from overexposure.
It didn’t work, because I hadn’t looked at the most important thing: what my herbs need in soil, light and water to grow and grow successfully.
While there are enough types of herbs to grow outside to fill a hundred gardens, including dill, rosemary, salvias, scented geranium and vervain before you begin your herb garden check out the optimal growing conditions that your herb plants will need. Each [plant|herb] [require|need]s optimal conditions to [thrive|persist|grow|survive] and prosper. Try [herb plants|herbs] like white willow, thyme, sage, poppies and lemon balm.
These are some other herbs that you can be successful with:
- Basil: If you plant basil, you will be on easy street because basil won’t need much help from you. Basil needs full or part-sun and can grow in a bed or pot, as long as it has good drainage, which reminds me to mention that you will only need to water it when the earth is dry. Use the sweet basil type for your Italian dinners for an unmistakable flavor.
- Lemongrass: I like the fresh, clean smell of lemongrass. Whether you buy it or raise it from seeds, this bright green, lemon-scented grass will add a spot of color to your garden and grow pretty high in just one growing season. Although you can begin with seeds, I buy mine from the local greenhouse, probably because I can’t wait to get that fresh lemongrass to my Thai and Indian dishes.
- Cilantro: I must admit that cilantro is my new favorite herb to raise in my garden and use in my cooking. It is a cinch to grow cilantro in your herb garden and it makes an awesome addition to your Tex-Mex meals.
- Chamomile: I use the German Chamomile kind in my hanging baskets where the results are wonderful. When you walk by it you can lop off a few leaves, rinse them, chop them up and brew them into a calming, soothing tea or try it in your evening bath. Chamomile is considered to be a sensual plant because it has a light and woody apple scent that will heighten your senses. It will also make you smile because it looks like a daisy with white petals and a yellow center.
So experiment, have fun, go dig in the dirt and get your hands dirty …there are a lot of ways to herb garden outside and none of them is the only way to do it—there is no right way, there is only your way.
