Growing Oregano – How to Grow Oregano
To begin growing oregano, you need to find out which variety you need to sow. There are different types of oregano, ornamental or culinary (edible). Oregano is very simple to upkeep, grow and harvest, so is very difficult to go wrong.
When growing oregano for kitchen use, there is two varieties to consider.
For Mediterranean style, go with Greek Oregano – this is the type we know most.
For French cuisine style, use Wild Marjoram (Origanum vulgare), as it has less smell and tastes sweeter.
Different varieties of growing oregano have purple or pink clusters that bloom in June. This year round plant can grow well in most moderate weather conditions.
You may be shocked to learn that oregano is a member of the mint family. The Greek word oregano means “joy of the mountain” Oregano grew like wildfire on the hills in Greece. Greek shepherds used to encourage their flocks to eat the herb, as they believed that it made the meat tender, and even taste better.
Plant oregano seeds in a worked over bed, and cover lightly with well-drained soil. Seeds can be planted inside, and then transplanted when the outside temperature remains at around 45 degrees Farenhiet. Oregano needs to be kept at this temperature, as it cannot tolerate cold conditions. Throughout the winter season, place the oregano in window boxes.
Make sure the soil does not retain water.
With oregano, it is best not to add any fertilizer or compost, as this tends to change the flavor of the herb.
Never over water. When growing oregano you can let the ground dry a tad, and then water lightly. The ground should not be soaked.
Try growing oregano in pots if you cannot supply a well draining soil bed.
Place the oregano plants a foot apart. And be sure to place in a sunny position, as this herb needs a minimum of 8 hours sunlight every day.
Oregano may grow two foot high but normally it averages a height of ten to twelve inches.
Tips for Growing Oregano
Never use mulch on oregano plants that will retain moisture such as wood chips, straw, or grass. Using stone mulch helps prevent root rot.
To produce more oregano leaves at harvesting time, pinch off the flower heads if your plant begins to blossom.
When the oregano has reached a height of around five inches, you can begin harvesting by pinching the leaves off the plants.
In order to encourage new growth, cut the plant back on occasion by about 3 inches – do this throughout the season.
Oregano Benefits
As for the medicinal purposes of growing oregano, the herb is good for arthritus, glaucoma of the eye, and chest infections.
For colds or flu, a small handful of oregano in a quart of boiling water is a natural remedy. Not only does this aromatherapy remove headcold symptoms, but also it leaves your skin soft and moisturized.
Oregano uses
Use oregano leaves as a welcome addition to all types of dishes, like fish, meats, salads, sauces, and stews.
Oregano can be dried and stored or chopped and saved in the freezer.
Growing oregano is as easy as pizza pie!
But the best benefit (other than the flavor) is the fact that the herb is available all year round.
