Growing Sage – How to Grow Sage
Many aromas can bring back happy memories.
Growing sage and using it to cook wonderful holiday meals is something your family will always remember.
Considering the cost of herbs to buy nowadays, growing your own herbs begins to make a lot of sense. An additional bonus is the enjoyment of using fresh ingredients in your meals. The savings made by growing your own produce can leave you extra time and money to re-invest back into the garden
Sage, (Salvia Officinalis) has a long history that goes back to the ancient Romans who thought growing sage imparted wisdom and improved mental clarity. Maybe that is the reason we never forget foods cooked with sage!
Sage is a hardy perennial that can last up to five years. The plant originally comes from the Mediterranean, meaning it can grow well in most types of soil. Like Thyme, sage enjoys direct sunlight. Young sage needs to be watered weekly. It is better to water more often during the summer if you live in a hot climate.
Sow herb seed indoors within ten weeks of the scheduled out-doors planting. Water the seeds with warm water.
When the seeds germinate, plant the seedlings where it will receive full sun. Sage requires a temperature of 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Water until the soil becomes slightly damp.
The seedlings need a bed of well-drained soil. Add a half-cup of bone meal two times during summer while the sage is growing.
The fastest way to start growing sage is to purchase in pots from the local garden store.
Once the danger of frost has disappeared, one quick journey to the garden store, and you can begin straight away. This might take away the fun of getting your hands dirty, but it is a time saving direction to go. It’s even possible to plant the sage purchased from the store straight into the garden.
In an area that has a shallow water table, growing sage can be undertaken in raised beds or containers. Protect the plants from extreme weather conditions.
Harvest sage leaves just before the plant starts to flower. To do this, when cutting the leaves, leave around half of the foliage left on the branch.
In order to dry sage, place in an area that is well ventilated and out of direct sunlight – on a window screen. The dried leaves can be stored in jars or zip-lock storage bags.
You may notice the herb becomes “woody” when growing sage, especially after a few years.
This means it is time to start again. You can plant from cuttings or start over with seed. Growing sage will ‘self sow’ by themselves if left to flower and set seed.

Dress the Thanksgiving turkey with aromatic sage to make the meal complete. It is even used throughout the year in poultry seasoning. The list is endless of foods that are seasoned to perfection with the addition of this tasteful herb.
Every good cook knows a kitchen is not complete without the addition of sage.

I use sage during Thanksgiving – it works well with pork stuffing. One helpful tip I got from growing sage is to plant it in full sun because it doesn’t like its roots to remain wet. Sage grows well in hot and dry climates.
