Growing Tea Herbs

Drinking herbal tea is an exceptionally guilt-free pleasure for me because it has no caffeine, no tannin, no calories; it tastes wonderful and is relatively inexpensive. You can get started with your daily dose of healing herbs by drinking a cup in the morning with your breakfast. If you’re using it to help you sleep, try a cup just before bedtime.
The positive effects of of drinking herbal tea have been proven for 100s of year. Each herb has its own unique benefits. While some can help with your nerves, others can get you going. Another host of herbs can reduce nausea and others clear your head.
A bed or two of your favorite tea herbs can get you through the long, cold winter with delicious hot tea and you can brew the fresh herbs to flavor your summer iced teas.
An added benefit of brewing your own herbal tea is the aroma. Snip a few leaves from your favorite tea herb like chamomile, peppermint, spearmint or fennel and you’re all set.
Making your home-grown herbal tea is uncomplicated. When using dried herbs, use one teaspoon for each cup of tea. If you are making a pot of tea add one teaspoon per cup (plus use an additional teaspoon for better results).
If you are making your tea with fresh herbs, you will need to use 2 to 3 teaspoons for each cup of tea because the fresh herbs aren’t as potent as the dried herbs.
You can make your own customized tea mix from several herbs, which I think is better than only using one. Add lemongrass or rosehip with your beebalm tea for a tangy, citrus tea.
Here are some of the best herbs to use in teas:
- Beebalm: Although this herb is a part of the mint family, it has a light, citrus aroma that reminds me of oranges. Beebalm was first used in a tea by the Oswego Native Americans in Canada. You can use it the same way they did, to help your upset stomach. You can even use it to ease with your sore throat.
- Hibiscus: Try the rose mallow variety of the beautiful hibiscus plant in your next herbal tea for an extra hint of citrus. There’s also the marsh mallow type (think marshmallow in flavor). This particular kind can help you with your sore throat or benefit you if you are prone to ulcers. Regardless of the type of hibiscus herb you use in your tea, the petals are all you need.
- Lemon Verbena: If you enjoy lemon like I love lemon, then you’ll love lemon verbena, which has the scent and taste of lemon whether you use fresh or dried in your hot or iced tea. This herb also adds flavor to other teas. I add a leaf or two of lemon verbena to my morning green tea–otherwise it just wouldn’t taste so good.
- Rosehip: The fruit of the rose herb has been considered to be among the most valuable herbs around due to its high vitamin C content. The high vitamin C content is likely the reason why they usually help with cold and flu prevention.
You will likely also enjoy one of the mints, lemon balm, or lemongrass in your next cup of tea.
