Know the Facts When It Comes to Orchid Care
Orchids are known to be fussy flowers to cultivate; yet the beautiful blooms they turn out are more than worthwhile. Here are a handful of tips that will help your orchids to flourish.
Growing Medium: Orchids won’t thrive in standard potting soil. This form of growing medium is usually too thick and can collect throughout the roots of the plant and suffocate them. Instead of utilizing common potting soil, you’ll have to use a specialized orchid growing medium made up of a mixture of organic and inorganic compounds. Keep the orchid’s roots well ventilated by making certain that the medium isn’t packed too tightly and that you choose a container that is the right size for the plant. Avoid choosing a container that’s too big since it will store a lot of water that your orchid doesn’t want, which can result in root rot.
Humidity: The ecosystem of an orchid is the muggy areas of the mountains and rainforests. If they are planted within a house, they’ll do what they can to duplicate this environment but, with exception of the bathroom, the orchid’s natural surroundings cannot be simulated inside without some work. To make it similar, you need to spray the area around your orchid plant to ensure that it gets the moisture it needs to flourish. You can even place containers of water, a humidifier or a water fountain by the plant. You might wish to grow your orchids in a hothouse because these structures usually have increased humidity levels with good air movement.
Natural light: Orchids like light provided that it’s not strong. Sunshine that’s too strong can produce harm to your plant and its leaves. If you spot a reddish tone to your plant’s foliage, it’s a sign that it is receiving too much sunlight. Be sure to reposition the orchid to a less sun-drenched location, or give it some shade with curtains or blinds.
Temperature: Orchids thrive in 70 to 90 degree temperatures; though, the precise temperature span can be different according to the species of orchid you are raising. For most orchid varieties, temperatures will need to drop through the night along with the dormant times so that they can bloom. If you are cultivating your orchids indoors, maintaining the proper temperature isn’t that hard and you don’t need to do anything extra to the surroundings. Yet if there are complications, you might need to move the plant to a different location throughout particular times of the year.
Moisture: Make sure to water your orchid with care. Usually, an orchid doesn’t require watering more than once per week. If you are not sure if your plant requires watering, examine how damp the growing medium is. If it’s still somewhat damp, don’t give it more water. If it’s completely dry, it’s time to water your orchid.
