Northern Natives For A Garden Wish List
Winter is upon us. The ground is frozen. What should a savy gardener do? Writing a garden list seems like the one activity left. A northern garden wish list would not be finnished without Coneflower, Black-eyed Susan, Moonbeam Coreopsis, and False Indigo. Why is it important to use native plants? Most experienced gardeners know that choosing native plants can save on water, time and money.
Coneflower(Echinacea) is a lovely native flower that every garden should have. This flower is a blast of pink and an abundant resource of food for bugs and animals. It makes a great companion plant with many grasses and roses and sedum. It also has roots that can survive in drought weather and clay soil. Over the years, this plant will grow and spread abundantly. This is with out any doubt one for the “honey dew” list.
Black-eyed Susans should also be on a gardeners list of native plants to add to the garden. Black-eyed Susan(Rudebeckia) will bloom with abundance in orange/yellow and brown. They add dramatic color effect andpizaz to your flower beds. These native plants act like a natural bird feeder in your landscape. They are also quite prolific and will quickly fill up a bed within a year or two with a wondrous stand of flowers. They are an adaptable garden plant because they can go just about anywhere in the sun or shade and they are very drought tolerant. These stars of the native plant world will give any garden a much needed facelift.
Moonbeam Coreopsis is the one plant everyone will want next year. These are some of the last bloomers of the season. It has a very unique yellow color. This light and airy upright native adds a touch of magic to any garden. In other words a little moon beam coreopsis goes a long ways. It is drought tolerant, has abundant blooms and it thrives in clay and poor soil.
Baptisia or False Indigo is a native plant must have especially if you are looking for a blast of blue in your garden. Any gardener who has been around the yard once or twice knows that blue flowers are hard to come by in the garden. False Indigo is breathtaking to behold it is an excellent addition to any landscape. This native can be a little tricky to get established because of it’s deep root system. It is a show stopper with upright bushy blue spires and elegant foliage. This superstar can handle drought,flood,clay soil, burning sun and part shade.
These are all great and versatile native plants to add to any garden. These native plants can be left untouched even after they bloom so that the wildlife can continue to enjoy them. All your wish list needs now is some ornamental grass, some gazing balls and some cool garden decor!
