Re-potting Or Planting Your Orchid

May 10th, 2010 Herbman Comments off

The orchid is one of the most gorgeous and most loved flowers in the universe. As a result they have become more and more admired each year. Now what if you just acquired your opening orchid or accepted one as a present and you do not know how to look after it? The indentical stock exercise applies for planting a brand new orchid as for re-planting an original plant that you might have had for some time.

When planting or re-planting an orchid you will to begin with want to get hold of some suitable potting medium. And no, the dirt from the garden will not do. That is the most usual error that many people make. If you want to make certain that your orchids die then put them in common soil as that is what will occur if you do not use the exact potting medium.

All orchids do well when living in a fibrous and porous medium. You will on occasion find them growing in media like bark, cork, coconut shells or something similar. The primary problem with materials like these is that they can rot rather quickly. When this transpires you will have to repot your orchid. OK so there is nothing wrong with repotting but if you keep doing it your orchids will suffer. So the way to go is to purchase some ready mixed orchid potting material from a local garden center without postponement. A gardening center will certainly be able to supply the true growing medium for your beautiful orchids and in particular if you are a beginner, that is decidedly the best thing for you to use.

Now it is time for you to choose the right pot. The style and color is or course up to you but the size of the pot will have to depend on the size of the plant. If you are a novice do not make your sole consideration that the pot is not too modest since you might finish up by making use of one that is lots too big. That is a mistake. The roots of your orchid plant must be able to contact pretty well all the moisture in the pot. If your pot is much too large, that will simply be inconceivable so be sure to get it right.

The easiest technique to get an approximation of what the proper size pot should be is to check other orchids in a store or your local gardening center. Find some orchids that are approximately the same size as yours and you will see the correct size of the pot.

Come on then. Let’s plant your beautiful orchid. Fill up the pot with your orchid potting mix and establish a hole in the midsection. It will make it easier if you do not use all of the potting material at first. Filling a pot to about half full is the proper way to commence.

Now you are keen to get your orchid out of its first pot. Take care because this might be more troublesome than it sounds. Now continue cautiously and carefully for some roots will have stuck to the inside surface of the container. Even so, you will have to tolerate that finally you might be forced into the use of a knife to cut those roots that just will not let go. It is acceptable to do this but try not to overdo it.

After taking your orchid out of the former pot,  just  place it in a new one. Now fill the remainder of the fresh pot with the rest of the potting material and tap it down just a bit. You do not want to let your potting material to be too loose but do not stuff the pot. Now you have ended near enough your planting exercise. You might have to support the bulbs that are too weak to stand on their own. You can do this by putting a stake into the potting material, being careful not to injure the roots and then tieing it with a piece of string.

That´s it. If you have pursued the instructions you have just planted or re-potted an orchid, so congratulations you.
