Your Home Herb Garden Needs Attention in Autumn
The gold, red and brown colors fill your yard in the fall and your home herb garden is calling you. This autumn with the weather not too hot and not too cold is perfect time to enjoy your herb garden plants.
The beautiful blooms in your garden will give you the seeds for next year’s garden. You can confine the seeds by placing a paper bag over the blooms. Put your hand around the bag and grab the stem. Trim the stem to release the bag. To release the seeds from the pod, rub the bag. Now you can put them in containers for storing until planting. I put them in envelopes with labels and the envelopes go into a shoe box.
If you want to dry your herbs on the stems, then tie a few of them together and hang in a dry place. Sun light will strip the taste and dry up the oils in herb that are drying, so find a good dry and dark location. Remove the leave after they are dry and they are ready for your recipes. If the sprig is looking good, you can put in a jar and cover with oil or vinegar. The flavored vinegar is great for adding to your meal. Saving jars for this purpose is fun. After 2 weeks, I put a bow on the jar and give it as a gift. These make great gifts for a house warming. People like to add a little tarragon vinegar to their salad or garlic oil to there sautes.
Another drying method is to strip the herb leaves laying them out on paper or a screen. A sweater screen is perfect.In a day or two, you can put the leaves in a container for latter use. It is fall, so time to trim back the herbs for their rest period in winter. Or if you are in a very cold climate, it is time to bring them indoors.
So, now you have cut, dried and thinned the herb garden plants, you are not through yet. What more your ask? Autumn is a perfect time to plant, yes I said plant. Garlic, chives, french tarragon and thyme are great autumn plants. If you have a warm or hot climate then add dill and parsley to your autumn planting. Two other herb garden plants for fall planting are shallots and saffron. Schedule their planting with the daffodils.
