Your Themed Kitchen Herb Garden

I collect cookbooks and like to experiment with interesting dishes from other culture like a Mexican mole. Do you enjoy cooking mouth-watering international meals? You can try your hand at cultivating a scrumptous themed kitchen herb garden.
You can raise the major herbs in your own garden and have the freshest ingredients to add to your recipes, or experiment on your own.
A themed kitchen garden can be grown in the ground or you can grow your themed kitchen garden in containers.
Look no further than these recommendations for your own themed culinary herb garden:
- Asian: There are so many different cultures and people in Asia, including Thai, Chinese, Indian and Vietnamese, so how could the food be dull? Try growing lemongrass, cayenne pepper, cardamom and anise in your Asian culinary herb garden. The licorice flavor of anise adds a warm sweetness to baked goods, soups and Indian dinners. You can brew it with your tea and add it to your cookie dough for a special treat. The growing popularity of Asian cooking has helped it fall back into favor in the US in recent years.
- Mexican: Would you love to have a bit of a Mexican herb fiesta? Some spicy beans and rice or nachos will quickly hit the spot. The best Mexican recipes always include these: Cayenne pepper, Cilantro and Garlic.
- Italian: Just about everybody I know has their favorite Italian dish. My favorite is lasagna, of course. The best I ever had was my mom’s which included all these great herbs: basil, fennel, parsley, garlic, marjoram, oregano, rosemary and thyme. The oniony taste of garlic makes it a perfect addition to most Italian dishes. Put a little of it on your roasted chicken or add it to your soups and stews. You can even put some chopped garlic in your mashed potatoes. Be aware, the longer you cook it, the milder the flavor becomes so don’t overcook it!
- Middle East: If you have not tried any of the exciting and flavorful foods from the Middle East and Northern Africa, you’re missing some fantastic dinners. The tastes are so varied and the ingredients are so out of the norm for most of what I usually have in my recipes, such as chick peas, figs and couscous. These herbs are often to be found in the recipes for Middle Eastern dishes: cardamom, garlic, parsley, rosemary and saffron.
- German: You do not have to wait for October to cook up an Octoberfest dish at home if you have the right herb plants used in German cuisine. For authentic German dishes, try these herb plants: chives, dill, horseradish, sage and thyme. Horseradish, which is in the mustard family, is a wonderful condiment, opening the sinuses while adding tang to the taste buds. Horseradish is a fantastic addition to your meals. Use horseradish in mayonnaise and potato salad. It will also go well in cream cheese spreads or meat loaf.
One of the fabulous things about herb gardening it that herb plants are like a gift that keeps on giving. When you remove a few leaves from your sage plant, it can grow back. Oftentimes it can grow back bigger and fuller than it was before.
